Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked has threatened to block Supreme Court appointments if her conservative judge of choice is not picked for one of two available seats, Haaretz reports.
The Judicial Selection Committee is supposed to make their selections Feb. 22 for the two spots left open by outgoing justices Uri Shoham and Yoram Danziger.
Shaked’s choice for one of the seats is Alex Stein, who has lived in the United States for the past 15 years and is a professor at Brooklyn Law School.
Supreme Court President Esther Hayut is said to be against Stein’s nomination, but nothing has been confirmed.
Seven of the nine committee members must agree on a candidate to be chosen. With the support of a fellow cabinet member and a government-aligned lawmaker, Shaked would have a three-person block.
