Israel is installing homes in a new settlement for the first time in 25 years, AFP reports.
“Multiple prefabricated mobile homes” were brought to the site that will become Amichai, which is on Palestinian territory that’s been occupied by Israel for 50 years.
There have been other settlements but they were built without the government’s permission. This settlement will be the first sanctioned since 1991, although AFP says all settlement construction is considered illegal under international law.
Amichai is located near to the Shilo settlement in northern West Bank, according to AFP.
This new settlement is meant to replace one that was demolished in February 2017 after the Israeli supreme court said it was on private Palestinian land.
The United Nations views Israeli settlements as the biggest detriment to peace talks between Israel and Palestine.
