The party opposing the current prime minister in Canada has said it would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, AFP reports.
“Canada’s Conservatives recognize the obvious fact that Israel, like every other sovereign nation, has a right to determine where its capital is located,” the party said on its website.
The election against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals will be in 2019.
The Conservatives last held power from 2006 to 2015, AFP reports, but the party seems to be picking up steam again.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced in December he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv.
Last week the administration announced the move would come in May.
Israel claims the whole city as its capital, while Palestine views the eastern sector as the capital of its future state.
