At least 700 Afghan, Palestinian and Syrian pro-regime fighters have been sent to the front lines of Syria’s Eastern Ghouta, AFP reports.

Britain-based monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the reinforcements were deployed to two main battlefronts on the western side of the rebel-held enclave, including the town of Harasta.

The Syrian army and allied military groups began an offensive in the area Feb. 18 and have been closing in on the rebels ever since.

But the campaign has killed more than 800 civilians in the process, and barely stopped for a ceasefire the U.N. Security Council called into effect a week ago.
