France won’t make same ‘error’ as Trump, recognize Jerusalem as capital of Israel

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he will not make the same “error” as U.S. President Donald Trump by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Macron was speaking Wednesday at the annual dinner of Crif, which is France’s umbrella of Jewish communities.

While he commented that he would like France to strengthen its ties with Israel, he said it’s important to remain neutral in the fight between Israel and Palestinians for claim to the territory.

“The consequences would be bad for everyone, including Israel,” he said. “If we recognize Jerusalem, then we would lose our ‘honest broker’ status — and that’s what’s most useful for everyone.”

He said making that sort of promise would be like doing it “just to please you at dinner.”
