Algeria: Senator Djamel Ould Abbes arrested on corruption charges

An Algerian senator close to former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was placed in pretrial detention on accusations of corruption.

A Supreme Court judge ordered Djamel Ould Abbes incarcerated in Algiers on Sunday over charges that include the squandering of public funds, illegally signing deals, and falsifying official documents when he was a government minister during Bouteflika’s first term, the official APS news agency reported.

Ould Abbes, who is also the senate’s vice president, waived his parliamentary immunity last month amid rising pressure against the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN).

An already delayed presidential election set for July 4 was postponed after the only two potential runners – both little known – had their candidacies rejected.
