The United Arab Emirates recorded 3,140 new coronavirus cases and 20 deaths, the highest since the start of the pandemic, within the last 24 hours, the country’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority reported on Friday.

There were also 4,349 recoveries, according to the NCEMA tweet.

The UAE’s current COVID-19 death toll is at 1,093 and the active cases are at 12,209, NCEMA UAE’s website suggests.

Despite a continuous increase in daily cases, the country is currently leading the way in vaccinations, with 5,373,730 vaccine doses administered. As of Wednesday, the UAE vaccinated 40 percent of its population and 48 percent of the country’s elderly residents- a significant milestone in their fight against the virus, NCEMA reported.

The vaccination program was rolled out in December 2020 and aimed to vaccinate 50 percent of the population by March 2021.
