MEA – Palestinian sources revealed intense Qatari efforts to close the gaps between the Palestinian President “Mahmoud Abbas” and Marwan Barghouti, “a member of the Fatah Central Committee,” regarding the upcoming presidential and legislative elections.
“Qatar attempts to block the path to what is known as the reformist movement that led Muhammad Dahlan, whose opinion polls show progress recently, which raises the fear for local Palestinian parties also for regional parties,” sources added.
The sources pointed out that Qatar has offered the Barghouti family substantial financial assistance, with conditions to choose not to be in Dahlan’s list or Nasser Al-Kidwa, the recently dismissed Fatah leader. In contrast, Marwan has the right to run for the Palestinian presidential elections if it happens.
Also, the sources said that there are influential Palestinian officials arranged for Barghouti’s wife to leave for Jordan and then Qatar and met with former Knesset member Azmi Bishara and the Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Jibril Rajoub, a member of Fatah Central Committee and the head of its delegation for the Palestinian reconciliation talks, had said in statements last week that he would not rule out Marwan’s candidacy Barghouti from the presidential elections through the list of Fatah during the coming period.
